Biographies

Meino Harms Ubben was born at Meinersfehn, Kris Leer; Ostfriesland, Gernmany at 5:00 a.m. on November 7, 1847.   Meino was the third child in a family of six children, born to Harm Caspers Meinert Ubben and Maria Janßen Eilers.  Ubbe Harms Arends (shopkeeper) and Katrina (nee Ubben) Fischer served as Godparents at Meino Harm's baptismal.  He was baptized by his uncle, Pastor Fisher on November 23, 1847 at the Remels Evangelical Lutheran church.

Meino Harms Ubben and Maria Janßen Eilers came from Ostfriesland, Germany on the same ship, May 15, 1867.  As they approached the territorial waters of the United States, a fire broke out on board ship and the Captain changed course to Cuba where the ship anchored briefly for repairs.  After repairs were made, the ship proceeded on to the port of New Orleans, Louisiana.

From there, Meino and Maria booked passage on a steamboat from whence they proceeded up the Mississippi and Missouri River to the Rockport, Iowa area.  Meino received his naturalization papers at Brownsville, Nebraska on September 16, 1871 and they were finalized on August 28, 1888.  Meino arrived at St. Louis; Atchison Co., Missouri in 1875.  In May of 1876, Meino moved temporarily to Phelps City, Missouri where he lived approximately three years. 

Maria Janßen Eilers was the third child in a family of ten children, born to Jann Janßen Eilers and Mareke (Mareeke) Habben Buhr.  Maria was born in Firrel, Germany on October 12, 1851.  She was baptized and confirmed at Strackholt, Germany.  Meino and Maria were married at Rockport; Atchison Co., Missouri on August 24, 1877.  After a short period, they moved to Auburn, Nebraska where they lived for about three years and eventually moved to a farm about one-half mile west of the Kansas/Nebraska state line Evangelical Lutheran church.

Meino Harms Ubben died on October 7, 1914 at Marysville, Kansas.  Miller Funeral Home had charge of his remains.  He was buried at the Kansas/Nebraska state line Evangelical Lutheran church cemetery.  Maria Janßen Ubben passed away on January 6, 1938 at Oketo, Kansas.  She was buried along side of Meino Harms at the Kansas/Nebraska Immanuael Lutheran church.  Pall bearers at her funeral were Meinke Frehling, George Tjaden, Henry Herman, Henry Poopen, Henry Saathoff, Ansel Ehnen and Wilke Tjaden.
